Cells at Work for His Glory
Building a strong body and strong spirit
It’s Friday again! Hope you had a great week—and if it was rough, I pray that God gives you the strength and wisdom to keep going every day. Let me know how I can pray for you in the comments!
It’s been a few years now since the entertaining and educational anime Cells at Work premiered. I learned a lot about how the human body functions through it, presented in a clever and sometimes thrilling way. While browsing Netflix, I noticed a live-action version. It’s a movie, not a series, and it moves much faster. The acting and costumes reminded me of Power Rangers—fun if not a little rushed.
In short, the story takes place inside a human body, where every cell has a role to keep the person live and running. The main character is a red blood cell delivering oxygen, and she befriends a white blood cell who fights off invading bacteria. The “world” they live in belongs to Niko Urushizaki, the human host, and the movie jumps between her life and the cells’ battles inside her. It ends with an intense fight that I won’t spoil!
Watching it reminded me that our bodies work hard for us, and it’s our job to care for them in return. The Bible calls our bodies temples of the Holy Spirit; maintaining them physically and spiritually honors God:
Flee from sexual immorality... Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God?... So glorify God in your body.
~ 1 Corinthians 6:18–20 (ESV)
Taking care of our bodies matters to both us and God. Staying active, eating well, resting, and protecting our minds from temptation all play a part in honoring Him. The stronger our bodies are, the more strength we have to do God’s work; the more we flee from situations that would treat our bodies in an unholy way, the more we honor God.
Let’s be like those diligent Killer T and white blood cells—always ready to defend our health! In the same way, we should protect our spiritual well-being and flee from lust and temptation. It’s rough out there! There are traps everywhere, but as long as we focus on Christ and ask Him to guide us, He will give us the strength and wisdom we need, making life that much more peaceful.
Memory Verse I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.” ~ Romans 12:1 (ESV)
Weekly Mission: How can you start making changes to keep your body, both physically and spiritually, healthier than it already is? It will likely be difficult, but start taking steps today to make it happen!
